Discerning spirits

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth.  He is in each true believer in Christ to teach them the truth. (John 14:15-17) His truth has the power to sanctify or set the true believer apart from the spirit of error which will attempt to persude the believer to follow the philosophies and ways of the antichristian world system. (John 17:11-21; 1 John 2:15-17, 4:1-6)

True believers recognize his voice and follow him and not the strange voice of error. (John 10:5)

It's the will of God that his church, those that believe in the word of the Lord Jesus Christ, be united under the proper teaching of truth. (John 17:15-21; Ephesians 4:11-16)

Jesus said he was the truth. (John 14:6) He said God must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24) Jesus said his truth had the power to both unite people in the unconditional love of God or separate even the closest of relationships should one party choose to reject his truth. (Matthew 10:34-39)

The truth is to be spoken in love between members of the church in order that the church might become more like Christ. One of the ways God's spirit is revealed through individual members of the church is through the spiritual gift of discerning of spirits. When used in teaching it helps the church separate truth from error and march in step with God's word. (1 Corinthians 12:10; Ephesians 4:11-16)
